Anne Claire & Nicolas, Lyon

This Monday, we’re meeting the charming Anne-Claire, her husband Nicolas and their three children: Anton, 5 years old, Scarlett, 3 years, and Albertine, just 6 months. They live in a nice village near Lyon, in a house from the 1900’s that they renovated 4 years ago. Anne-Claire has just founded her linen brand, Maison Margaret, which will be on the market in the early 2017. Nicolas is a commercial manager.

Anne-Claire is talking here about their family life in the Lyon area where it is easy to combine nature and city life.

IN THE CITY

Why did you choose to live close to Lyon?

We love our village which is both quiet and located very close to Lyon. It allows us to easily enjoy a big city with a lot of culture, shopping etc … Lyon is a city where it is good to live when you like to hang out, wandering  between The Saône and the Rhône.

We are also close both to the South and the mountains: we go regularly to Provence, but also just for the day to Annecy by the lake, or even to the mountains in Winter.

Is Lyon a city for families?

Lyon offers all kinds of possibilities: sports activities, cultural programs, museums … The Rhône and the Saône quays have been recently renovated and make beautiful walks, far from the traffic.

What activities with children do you like doing in Lyon?

A flea ride on Sundays or a wander in the park of the Tête d’Or to watch the animals, enjoy the merry-go-round and eat pancakes. We also love wandering through the Heights of the Fourvière basilica.

What are your favorite family museums?

The Musée des Confluences and its pretty cabinet of curiosities in particular, and also the Gadagne Museum (puppet museum in old Lyon). I would also love to go to the Museum of Contemporary Art of Lyon with the kids .

What are the most family friendly places in Lyon?

The flea market near the Canal is quite kids friendly: it’s a nice Sunday outing, you can have lunch there and find some small antique cars or prams for dolls …

What are your favorite restaurants with children?

Many good addresses! I love going to Apiales with Albertine in the stroller, because it is always very good and spacious, which is rather rare in Lyon! Otherwise, I like the Mama Shelter‘s brunch and also the Selcius brunch. The burgers at Burger and Wells are also very good and children can play without disturbing anybody. Another very good family address is  Slake Coffee House, which offers great sandwiches for kids, and salads for us. The desserts are delicious!

Could you give me a recipe that works for sure with children?

Waffles with almond milk! My son asks for them all the time : with sugar or not, with hot chocolate …  This recipe an Instagram friend, Cécile Molinié, gave me makes very crunchy waffles!(See recipe at the bottom of the page).

When the weather’s bad, what do kids usually do at home?

They tell stories the one to the other and they love making huts with the ton of cushions that we’ve got in our house!

What are their favorite books?

Mon Amour and Un Amour de Petite Soeur by Astrid Desbordes : simple, tender and always true when talking about inner feelings and family.

En route pour la Tour Eiffel by Iris De Moüy, as well as the books of Sasek, (Casterman éditions) talking about big cities such as Paris, San Francisco, London : they open the mind and the imagination and their illustrations are wonderful!

A thousand thanks to Anne-Claire for this nice interview, full of good addresses in Lyon;)! I’m longing for discovering  its linen brand, Maison Margaret, aren’t you?

In the meanwhile, we can follow her on her Instagram and on her beautiful blog 😉 …

Let’s meet again on Thursday with Lila, our dietician, who will talk about the cereals to be favored to fill up with proteins when you’re veggie!

… And for those who wish, here is Anne-Claire’s recipe for crispy waffles:

  • 250g flour
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 50g  caster sugar
  • 25 cl almond milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 50 g of melted butter
  • 25 cl of a mix of sparkling water and beer 😉

In a large bowl, combine flour, salt and sugar. Add milk, stirring to prevent lumps. Break the eggs and separate the whites from the yolks. Add the yolks to the batter and the melted butter. Mix well. Add the beer, stir well, then whip the whites to a light mousse and add them to the mixture. Let the preparation rest for one hour before baking.
