At home with #8 : Guenter and Kristin, New York City.
Today, we meet an American family : Kristin, Guenter, Max, 4, and Alexandria, 2 years. Kristin owns an online children’s store, Miniluu, and her husband is a photographer. All the 4 live in an apartment in Manhattan.
I met Kristin’ virtually several months ago by Instagram. Then, we met each other ‘in real life’ in July, in Paris where Kristin had come with her chidren to visit the city and to find beautiful stuffs for her online store.
What is your daily family organisation? Each day is different and everyone helps out where they can but usually we wake up early and make breakfast together. Then each goes off in a different direction : Max to school, and Alex to work with one of us. On days off, we run errands or squeeze in a play date.
What do yo love cooking for dinner during the week?
We are mostly vegetarian and each has different tastes 😉 … But one easy recipe we all love is homemade butternut squash soup (see recipe at the end of the article).
When the weather is bad, what do your children do at home ?
At home on bad weather days we collect every pillow in the house, pile them up in front of the couch and watch the kids jump into the giant mountain of fluff!!! … All while blasting their favorite music of course 😉 !
When we stay at home altogether, we love to bake cookies and play board games like Brain Quest and Haba’s Animal upon Animal.
What books do your kids love ?
One of our favorite books at the moment is Emily’s Balloon by Komako Sakai : Alexandria loves the simple story and, for Max, it is a great learning-to-read book!!
We also love The Story of Ping by Marjorie Flack and National Geographic Kids Magazine
What are their favourite toys/games?
When it comes to toys, we have relatively few, and they are all very simple! There is a lot of excitement in our house around the endless possibilities of a big empty box or a bundle of sticks…We also love playing ukulélé…
One of our favourite games is a co-operative game, made by Family Pastimes (see photo). We also love Tegu blocks, or boards games like Max (the cat).
When you go out with children, what is your favorite family restaurant?
We almost never eat at restaurants. Actually I can’t remember the last time we went to a restaurant in NY! But we do love to stop by Magnolia Bakery in the Village (the “cupcake store“ as Alexandria calls it) now and then for banana pudding and a cupcake 😉 !
Where do you like to go out with kids during the weekend? A favorite thing to do on the weekends is visit the MoMA museum. They have tons of free kids programs for ages 4 and up (baby sisters are welcome too!). We also love to go for hikes in the woods by our apartment and wind up at a little cafe down the road where we get a hot tea and an oatmeal cookie.
Thanks a lot, Kristin, for this interview! … Reading this, I really feel like going immediately to New York with children!
See you soon …for A BIG BIG surprise!
*The butternut squash soup with parmesan recipe :
Cut into cubes 3 pounds of butternut squash (peeled and seeded) . Salt and pour 2 tablespoons of olive oil on them. Roast them for 30 minutes in the oven at 400 °F (15 minutes on each side). In a large stockpot, heat a tablespoon of butter and a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add one yellow onion, chopped stalks of celery, chopped leaves of sage. Stir occasionally, until the vegetables are translucent and tender, 10 minutes. Add the squash, 6 cups of chicken broth, and a pinch of salt and bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for 30 minutes or until the liquid is flavorful. Remove from heat. Hand blend the soup in batches until smooth. Return to the pot and keep warm. Top with grated Parmesan.
