This month is tradionally the month of flu… Flu is mainly due to virus transmitted through air.  Virus mutates easily and  vaccine can be rapidly less efficient … But you can use natural remedies, such as cinnamon and honeysuckle.

Cinnamon 

It’s been used for thousand years by Chinese medicine because of its nutritional properties : antioxydant, full of fibres, iron and manganèse. It’s very efficient against flu and agastroenteritis.

Cinnamon can be used in jerbal teas or in cooking recipes.

  • Winter cinnamon herbal tea :

Mix together : 2 teaspoons summer savory, 5 cloves,1 stick of cinnamon and 2 teaspoons of thyme. Add 1 liter of water and boil it. Drink 3 cups a day, but not more. Forbidden for pregnant women and children under 2. 

  • Honey and cinnamon herbal tea :

Brew 10 g of cinnamon sticks with one liter of water. Add honey as you want. Drink all along the day… It will give you great tonus!

  • Vitamined orange and cinnamon salad :

(Servings 4 ) : 4 oranges, 2 tablespoons orange blossom water, 1 tablespoon honey, 1 teasppon ground cinnamon. Peel the oranges and slice them. Mix together cinnamon, honey and orange blossom water. Spread the mixture on top of the oranges.

  • Carrot and cinnamon risotto (servings 6): 

400 g  carrots (sliced into dices) , 5 fresh mushrooms, 1 onion, 30 ml olive oil, 350 g Arborio rice (for risotto), 1 tablespoon of butter,  60 g grated Parmesan cheese, 15 cl white wine, 1,2 l hot stock; salt and pepper, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon.  Cut the carrots into dices, slice the mushrooms and the onion. In a big pan, pour some olive oil and cook the onion. Pour some  rice and keep stirring for one minute (rice has to be become translucent). Pour the wine and let it boil off. Add the carrots and the mushrooms. Salt and pepper. Pour a big ladful of hot stock  and let it boil off.  Repeat as much as necessary till the rice is cooked. At the end, add the Parmesan cheese.

  • Express cinnamon spaghetti :

(Servings 4) : 350g spaghetti, 200g pumpkin, 100g frozen peas, 1 cinnamon stick, a few thyme leaves, salt, pepper, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, ground cinnamon. ,Boil one liter of water with the thyme, the cinnamon stick and some salt. Add the peas the pumpkin (cut into dices) and the spaghetti. Boil for around 12 minutes. Drip-dry and add one tablespoon of olive oil and 2 pinches of cinnamon. It’s ready!

Trick : add the cinnamon just at the end because it can become sour if you cook it too much! 

Honeysuckle

A Chinese study which was published in Cell Research show that drinking honeysuckle herbal tea during flu epidemics would efficiently protect against flu. How to use it :

Brew some honeysuckle flowers in hot water for around 10 minutes (2 teaspoons per cup). Add some honey if you want. You can buy honeysuckle herbal tea in herbalist’s shop or in organic groceries.
