Cooking with kids

Sweet Cabane launches today  a new section called ‘Cooking with kids‘ to share with you fun and easy recipes to make with kids from 2 years.

Why this section? Because, at home, cooking is one of our favorite family activities, as well as drawing, painting or modeling clay. Like this one, cooking awakens your kids’ senses : it makes him discover materials and textures. He also learns how to make and build something with his own hands. Then, it’s a great way to learn how to fully focus on one thing.

Cooking together can also help your kid to know more about food : naming and knowing the food and not being afraid of it (food phobia is very common between 2 and 7 years-old). If you kid is older, you can teach him about nutritional facts : to what entent each ingredient is good for his body … and in what quantity!

Finally, cooking allows us to address the question of seasonality, an essential basis, I truly believe, for a good diet (I recommend the book Nature’s Day  I ‘ve already mentionned here).

And above all, cooking is a great moment to share with your children to chat and to have fun ! In short, a good way to enjoy everyday life !!!

To begin this section, I share with you a very simple recipe of our own : chocolate shortbreads. This recipe allows children to knead the dough, to create forms and then to enjoy their creations!

NYou will also find oldest recipes in this section, such as small Brazilian biscuits or Christmas hazelnut shortbreads.

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Refrigeration Time: 3/4 hour

Cooking time: 10 minutes at 200 ° c

  • 150g butter at room temperature
  • 150 g dark chocolate
  • 200 g flour
  • 150 g brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt (Guérande salt type).

The entire recipe can be made with the help of your child.

Melt the chocolate in the microwave for 1 minute with a tablespoon of water. In a large bowl, pour the flour, sugar, salt and butter cut into pieces (kids love cut soft butter). Let your child knead the dough with fingers to form a smooth ball. Add the chocolate and stir well with a wooden spatula. When the mixture is smooth, put it in the fridge for about 3/4 hour.
Then flour your work surface. Roll out the dough over a centimeter thick. Then cut the shortbreads with molds of your choice.

Place the shortbreads on a sheet of parchment paper. Bake for 10 minutes at 200 ° C.

It’s ready! You can keep your shortbreads several days in a box.
