January French “Hygge”

January is the month of the year when I prefer to stay warm at home, especially this week when the weather is intensely cold ;).

Far from being boring, I love it because finally, when you live in Paris, you’re very often outside, constantly doing lots of activities …. It is also the month to strengthen our immune system to fight against viruses.

It’s why I’d like to share with you some little Winter habits that make January cosier and lots more attractive than it could appear at first sight : soup, herbal teas, candles, a plaid and a good book … We don’t need much to create a sort of “Hygge” French art of living  …;)

To fight against viruses and feel warmed even by an icy cold, here is a simple recipe of soup that I adore : the curry soup.

Ingredients for 5-6 people:

  • 400 g carrots
  • 200 g sweet potato
  • 1 onion
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  • 1 or 2 teaspoons of spice curry (the most tasty are at Roehlinger)
  • 1 liter of chicken broth
  • Fresh coriander leaves
  • 20 cl of coconut cream (optional)

The preparation is easy : after peeling your vegetables and cutting them into pieces, fry them with oil, garlic and sliced onion in a big pot for 3 minutes. Salt and add curry spices. Cover with broth. Cook for 25 minutes. Mix, then add the coconut cream and the chopped coriander. A delight!!

If you wish, you can replace carrots and sweet potato with a mix of coral lentils and celery branch. Just as tasty and energetic!

Of course, there’s the classic, but still effective  honey + ginger infusion: peel 2 cm of fresh ginger. Infuse it for  5 to 10 minutes in 30 cl of boiling water. Add some honey. Perfect for fighting a cold that starts and stimulating good mood (ginger, has anti-bacterial and anti stress properties).

Another perfect hot drink in winter : golden milk, which you can make from vegetable milk (almonds, oats) or cow milk. Mix a teaspoon of curcuma, with a teaspoon of vanilla powder, a pinch of ground black pepper and a teaspoon of cinnamon. Pour on boiling milk. Stir well and serve. You can add a spoonful of honey;)

Apple tea is another favourite. Cut an apple in quarters. Boil 30 cl of water. Add the apple, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and a grated fresh ginger (1 cm). Let infuse for 10 minutes. Filter and serve. A delight!

I love lighting scented  candles, such as the natural ones from Essence + Alchemy or Honest in the living room or in the bedroom.

For a perfect evening, a hot bath, simply with a few drops of essential oil of lavender to completely relax.

Finally, nothing better thant reading a good book, such as The Scottish Trilogy by Peter May,  under a warm plaid, infusing a few drops of red myrtle essence in a big bowl of hot water (red myrte is well- known for its respiratory virtues).

Enjoy the next weekend to enjoy all this ….

Have a lovely week,

Emilie xx.
