Mum at work #2 : Arancha

Arancha is a 41 years-old Spanish woman, living in Paris since 2009, with her husband and her three children (10, 8 and 5 years-old). She’s the founder of desmedido, a made-to-measure sofas’ brand. Here, she tells us all about her job and her family life…

How did you decide to create desmedido ? I used to be an interior designer in Madrid for a long time. When we moved to Paris in 2009 (after my husband had changed his job), I used to walk around Paris with my baby and had a look at the interior design shops : it came to my mind that sofas were not perfectly designed for parisian apartments. So this is how I decided to create desmedido! I started this new activity step by step, asking for some advice to friends of mine, working for people I knew… At that time, my third child was still very young and my priority was to take care of my children!

What does your job consist of ? I create made-to-measure sofas : I try to understand what my client wants and what  his own constraints are, I draw sketches, I choose materials and supervise the sofa’s manufacturing in Madrid.  I manage the whole firm : design, of course, but also sales, marketing and desmedido’s website.

What do you like in your job? I enjoy human relationships which are at the heart of this job : understand what my client wants, who he is…

What do you not like ?  Lack of time and too many things to do : managing the house, taking care of children, and working! Moreover, my job is getting more and more intense!!!

How do you share your time between work and family ? My office is at home. I work everyday, except on Wednesday. I usually stop working at 4 pm to go and get children from school, then I start working again : I let me office’s door open so as the children can come and see me whenever they want…  I stop working at 7 pm when it’s time for bathing. On wednesday, I’ve got a nanny who helps me to manage chindren’s outdoor activities. It’s a rather hard day because I have to work meanwhile I take care of the children :  even though I try not to work a lot, I have to reply my emails, supervise orders…

Which moment do you prefer at home ? Children’s bathing, because I stop working and we have a good time together : we have a snack, talk … It’s a truly peaceful moment!

Which moment is more difficult ? Dinner, because it’s mainly logistics : cooking, serving, clearing…

Something you want to change ? In the future, I’d like to have my own place to work, not at home… I’d also like to have more ‘quality’ time with children during the week  : sometimes, I feel less concentrated on what they say in the evening because I’m a bit tired…

Good addresses about interior design shops ? I love going to flea markets like Le Marché Paul Bert in Saint-Ouen,  or bric-à-brac shops  in small towns I visit… I sometimes go to Conrad Shop or Habitat.

Thanks a lot, Arancha!
